Dental Care is essential for the health of your Vail Valley Pet

Dental month at Mountain Animal Hospital Center and Mobile vet is just around the corner here in the Vail Valley. During this month we offer 20 % off all dental services including dental xrays.

Preventative Dental health in both cats and dogs is essential for a long, healthy life.

We recommend a routine annual examination for your pet, which includes a detailed oral exam. During that oral examination, the pet’s oral cavity is inspected for evidence of broken teeth, abscessing teeth, oral cancers, lesions in the enamel that can lead to tooth decay, as well as “resorbptive” lesions in cats, often thought of “cavities” in cats that can be painful and lead to pain and disease.

Once an oral exam is done, a dental cleaning may be recommended by your veterinarian. During the dental cleaning, the teeth are scaled and polished, then they are examined with a small probe to find “pockets” below the gum line , indicating disease below the gums.

The teeth are then polished so any indentations in the enamel are filled in and tartar is less likely to build up quickly.

After the routine cleaning, your pet should have Dental radiographs. Dental radiographs allow us to visualize the “roots” of the teeth below the gum for early signs of decay, root “resorbption”, abscesses as well as bone cancers.   Performing a dental cleaning or extractions without dental xrays will soon be considered below the “standard of care” as many lesions which are painful to your pet cannot be seen with the naked eye.

So get your Vail Valley pet’s dental exam scheduled soon.

Remember, prevention is the best medicine!

We look forward to seeing you!
